Southwest Georgia Farm Credit Announces 2026 Scholarship Recipients

To help ensure a bright future for rural communities, as well as the agricultural industry, Southwest Georgia Farm Credit presents several scholarship opportunities each year.

Recipients of the 2026 Southwest Georgia Farm Credit scholarships include Carter Lawrence of Smithville, Mia Burnett of Sale City, Camden Rogers of Preston, and Angelina Gomez-Roman of Bainbridge.  

“Each of this year’s recipients reflects the values we believe in–hard work, integrity, and commitment to their communities,” said Paxton Poitevint, President & CEO of Southwest Georgia Farm Credit. “We’re proud to support students who are not only focused on their future, but who are already making a meaningful impact where they are today.”
 

Carter Lawrence
Carter Lawrence is a senior at Lee County High School and is the Duane Watson Scholarship winner. This scholarship was created in honor of the late Duane Watson, who measured the value of the life he lived by helping others. Duane Watson served the Association as a Relationship Manager, beloved by his customers and colleagues alike. Lawrence is a standout student known for his strong work ethic, leadership, and commitment to both agriculture and his community. A four-year varsity football player, he has also been actively involved in FFA—serving as a Chaplain and Treasurer—as well as FCA, all while balancing a part-time job and other community service acts. Demonstrating an entrepreneurial mindset well beyond his years, Lawrence has owned and operated his own produce business, Carter’s Farm Fresh, since he was young, growing and selling produce, eggs, honey, and more to his community. “Carter approaches challenges with a thoughtful, solutions-oriented mindset and is not afraid to think outside the box when faced with obstacles,” said Beth Green, a family friend. Known for being personable, hardworking, and dependable, Lawrence plans to attend Georgia Southern University to major in Environmental Science and continue building his passion for agriculture and business.
 

Mia Burnett
Mia Burnett is a senior at Westwood Schools and is one of two winners for the Farm Credit scholarship. Burnett is an outstanding student whose leadership, academic excellence, and commitment to service set her apart. A highly engaged leader, Burnett has been deeply involved in Georgia 4-H, serving in key roles at both the district and state levels, and earning recognition as a Master 4-H’er in multiple areas. Within her school, she has consistently taken on leadership positions across student organizations, demonstrating both initiative and a strong sense of responsibility. Her involvement extends beyond academics into athletics and community service, where she continues to make a meaningful impact. A two-time Mitchell County Youth Citizen of the Year financing and the 2025 recipient, she has also been recognized multiple times for her outstanding community service. “Without question, Mia exemplifies the highest standard of character through her leadership and service,” said Ke’Marcis Howard, Programs & Events Coordinator for Georgia 4-H. “I am confident she will continue to positively impact her community and excel in all future endeavors.” Burnett will be attending the University of Georgia to pursue Agriculture and Environmental Communications.
 

Camden Rogers
Camden Rogers is a senior at Southland Academy is one of two winners for the Farm Credit scholarship. Rogers is a dedicated and well-rounded student who has built an impressive record of achievement through his commitment to academics, athletics, and service. He has participated in a variety of school organizations like Senior Beta Club, KEY Club, FCA, Student Government, and more, while also competing in football, baseball, and track. He was earned numerous honors, including recognition from the University of Georgia, the College Board, and the State Farm Scholar Athlete Award for maintain the highest GPA while competing in multiple sports. Beyond the classroom, Rogers has demonstrated a heart for service through his involvement with local and national outreach efforts, as well as hands-on experience working at a veterinary hospital. “What sets Camden apart from other students who have his intellect is his disposition,” said William Rooks, Dean of Students and Athletic Director at Southland Academy. “His peers respect him because he genuinely cares for other students and treats all students with honor and dignity. His tremendous focus on his academics and extracurricular activities lead him to avoid the common distractions seen in high schools across the country.” Rogers will be attending Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College to pursue a degree in Animal Science.
 

Angelina Gomez-Roman
Angelina Gomez-Roman is a senior at Bainbridge High School and the winner of the Technical/Vocational scholarship. Gomez-Roman is a driven and thoughtful student who has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to her academics and school community. She has challenged herself through honors coursework and dual enrollment classes, showing both discipline and a genuine desire to learn. In addition to her academic efforts, Gomez-Roman has been very involved in service-oriented roles, including her participation in Anchor Club and her work as a teacher assistant at Saint Joseph Catholic Church. Her dedication has earned her recognition such as the American Citizenship Award and an Academy Award, reflecting both her character and achievements. “Angelina is a hardworking, respectful, and determined young woman who always strives to do her best,” said Heidi Chambers, EdD at Bainbridge High School. “She approaches challenges with resilience and optimism, and she never allows obstacles to define her limits.” Angelina will be attending Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College to pursue a Business degree.
